London going green
London was one of the first cities in the world to publish a climate plan compatible with the highest ambition of the Paris Agreement and has committed to being net zero carbon by 2030 and zero waste by 2030.[1]
London has a unique mix of strengths that make it a global powerhouse and driving force in the race to net zero: London has Europe’s highest concentration of climate tech startups with 1,084.[2]
London’s circular economy, an economic system that reuses and recycles materials to reduce waste, is projected to be worth £7bn annually by 2036.[3]
London is also making strides in sustainable transport, including:
- Electric vehicles: with more than 103,000 registrations of new electric cars in London and more than 13,000 charging points (a four-fold increase since 2019), the city is well on its way to meet its target of up to 60,000 charging points by 2030.[4]
- Charging bays: the Mayor of London plans to add 145 new electric car charging bays throughout 2025. [5]
- Strong industry: London's transport and storage industry is worth £1.4bn, is home to more than 15,500 businesses and is expected to employ 285,000 people by 2027.
