Edtech in London

London’s education technology sector is driving the revolution in developing new learning technologies. Here are four ways London is leading the way in this emerging sector.

1. A buzzing ecosystem

London has a thriving edtech ecosystem, with more than 250 education technology companies driving innovations and transforming the way people learn[1].

Eight of the top 10 edtech UK companies (based on how much equity investment they have received) are based in London[2].

Scaleups like Atom Learning, Perlego and Multiverse are prime examples of edtech companies scaling in the capital. This ecosystem also provides easy access to incubators specialising in edtech, such as Techstars, Founders Factory, Entrepreneur First, UCL Edtech Labs and EDUCATE Ventures Research[3]

2. Access to capital

London is home to many venture capital (VC) firms specialising in edtech, making it easier for education technology startups to access early-stage funding.

Emerge, Brighteye Ventures, Owl Ventures and MPA Capital are active VC players in London’s edtech sector. Between 2021 and 2024, edtech companies in the UK’s capital secured $1.3bn in funding across 299 deals[4]

3. World-class universities

Universities in London are increasingly renowned for producing top talent within the education technology industry. With strengths across disciplines such as business, technology and education, graduates gain the skills to drive innovation in digital technology, online platforms and digital tools.

One example is University College London’s (UCL) Education and Technology master’s programme, specifically designed to equip future leaders in the education technology sector.

UCL, Imperial and King’s College London are three of the world’s top 40 universities – and together with London’s vibrant tech ecosystem, they make the perfect place for edtech companies to set up and grow[5]

4. UK edtech opportunities

Edtech is one of the fastest growing sectors in the UK, growing at 22% year-on-year and valued at $4.68bn in 2021. There are approximately 1,000 companies active in the UK edtech market, employing a total of 49,000 people[6].

London's edtech ecosystem is the largest in Europe with an estimated value of $2bn[7]

In England, the education sector encompasses approximately 113,161 schools, including more than 2,390 in London and 140-plus independent private institutions showcasing the growing role of education technology in supporting diverse learning environments[8]

5. Supporting Ecosystem

London boasts a dynamic and supportive edtech ecosystem, combining government initiatives, innovation hubs, funding opportunities, research institutions and a large network of established companies and startups.

TLA Education for example, a working group of Tech London Advocates, is a specialised network of leaders and experts focused on fostering London’s innovation and technology to explore new possibilities in education.

Another example is the British Educational Suppliers Association (BESA), actively supporting new and emerging edtech companies in the UK, providing training and research opportunities through its launchpad.

In 2024, the London Edtech Week brought together experts, teachers, creative thinkers, and investors to discover and celebrate the newest improvements in educational technology. With more than 2,000 attendees and 30,000 subscribers, it is one of the biggest events in the sector[9].
